Hi I am 16 and here to learn about Dogo Argentino's. The first question I am curious about asking is Ear Cropping. Dog's have three ways of cooling down: By sweating from the pads on their paws, Panting, and Dilating the blood vessels in their Ears and Face. So if we Crop their ears, which main purpose is to cool them down and help pinpoint sound(if naturally standup), won't that make them a bit more handicap and prone to a heatstroke while exercising VS a dog with their full ears? I am not against Ear Cropping just want to know the facts.

When you crop the ear properly, they mimic the way the ear stands like the wolf. Obviously its a bit shorter, but the path of sound is much more direct than the flaccid ear. As for overheating, I have yet to see it effect a dog during intense fatigue. With a proper crop, you will still have about half of the original ear, so the process of.cooling should not be that affected since it is a secondary cooling mechanism anyway.

One could even argue (I don't know how succesfully) that the underside that is now exposed after the crop has more capilaries close to the suface of the skin therefore increasing the cooling ability of the ear ? They will definately look cooler if nothing else.

Thanks for the answer, I did not know that Ears were are secondary. If I was to get a Dogo I was skeptical on cutting his ears for fear of hindering his exercising abilities. I think I would keep him natural though because I like the look and I would be on the safe side of him overheating even though the pros of cropping outweigh the cons, like better hearing and a lesser chance of infection's because of better air flow.

And yes I think it looks good sometimes, I like the natural on most except that they look like big white APBT's when they ears aren't cropped.

If I were suggesting, I say cropped. It is the way the creators intended the breed and they planned to test them within an inch of life, so I doubt it will every hinder their ability to do anything. But if you prefer the look of natural, than there really is no choice, keep them natural, after all you will be the one sharing a life with your Dogo for next 13+ years(hopefully)

Look cooler......pun intended? LOL yeah the pun was intended... Sometimes my dry humor is too understated for the internet.
