Dogos are one of the smartest dogs you can get, they do not need choke chains, prongs, or anything else because they have the capacity to understand what's going on provided you teach them properly. They need strict rules which are consistent, but if you yell directly at the dog or try and discipline them directly, they can freeze up and not be receptive to training or the lesson being taught. For being arguably the toughest dog on the planet, they are HUGE girl thingys. Very emotional breed.
my 10 week old, duke, likes to attack shoes right? Well if I try and discipline him, he just looks at me and keeps chewing. If I look at the shoe like its a baby, and I make a fuss about the damage or the mess and not the fact that its duke doing the chewing, he stops immediately. He sees the mess and and my displeasure at the situation and goes "oh, he doesn't like that at all!"
I am definitely not a "positive only" kind of guy, but after reading about dogos and the current state of science based dog training, I am definitely MORE of a positive guy. If I were you, I'd maybe ditch the choke chain as Dogos naturally heel mostly, and concentrate on making your dogo WANT to listen to you. Thats the key. These choke collars work because of the causal relationship when they're on. As soon as you take the collar off, the dog knows it's ok to act up again.
just remember, they easily have the intellect of a 5 year old child.
There are two Dogo specific books on the google play store, the Monks of new Skeet have a couple great books, and also Zak George's Dog Training Revolution is super helpful as well. That's what I read before I got Duke. I also have puppy classes with a Certified Professional Dog Trainer to round out anything I'm not already doing.
