Hi first post.
Our dogo is almost 6 years old (Unnuetered for what it's worth) male. We have a 9month old baby.
Just wondering about people's experiences with Dogos amd babies, especially in the case where the baby came after the dogo was am adult. He's never been qggressive to any humans, he loves everyone and greets all passers by and loves to be rubbed and given attention. I even know of people who have hit him with huge rocks and he didn't attack
He did kill one sytray dog once, but it seems to have got into the kitchen and i guess with nowhere to run,it attacked him. Any other time these stray dogs are a factor he just chases them away. He was lightly taught to do that though(except for the killing). Sorry if i sound inhumane but i live in a very unique place-- its explainable.
So he's ok with dogs, but he had never even see another animal but a dog since about age 3 month's bcse we live on a remote island.. We eventually brought a cat but he hunted that thing day and night no matter what we did for days on end, i don't even think he barely slept, he was a different dog. I can see how q pig stands no chance. He got the cat of course. Then later the same thing happened to a gibbon we rescued. I stupidlybthoufht maybe he'd accept it as a human...anyway it had no better home to go to..
But he sent it to the big house in the sky the moment he could get to it.
The scary (amd amazing) thing with him. Is the "switch" That gets This is not like a prey instinct where a squirrel runs and the dog goes off rhe path until brought back under control
. His demeanpr changes and he locks onto the prey and will do his best to kill it. For as long as it takes. So basically he WILL kill it
Its amazing in a way and not his fault i figure. Thats what he's on this earth for in his mind during those moments.
The thing is when we brought the baby out, if she pooped her diaper, sometimes he would get that demeanor change. With her arms waving and that new smell, incoulsnt tell if he wqs im kill mode or just curious. It was stressful.
He loves milk and I really thought it was just the smell of the diaper, my wife thought otherwise and we werent sure and didnt try to find out bcse hes literally unstoppable in this mode.
But after a few months he seemed to fogire it out
And now he seems to have gotten used to the baby, and is laying down when he comes near her and lets her do whatever she wants to him. Pull on his ears, fur, etc.
Still you wonder some days did his ears perk. Up bcae he heard something or is he in kill mode and the baby is the prey...really seems like no, but since hes killed everythint else with just one bite, cant risk it...i want them to be best friends the baby gets a kick out of him too.
The sooner they can be ledt alone to adventure the better.
i just wondered what other peoples experiences were Is their any way to test him to see if the prey instinct would get triggered by the baby? Or good ways to socialize him (she gives him treats but not sure if he realizes who Theyre from. just looking for anyone's experience they might like to share about their experiemce with an adult dogo who got a new baby into their life
