We've used the following wormers with a high degree of success...AND they are pretty inexpensive too.
NEMEX is a popular brand of wormer, but it's NOT CHEAP! However it is the same thing as Strongid labled for horses, and Pyrantel Pamoate, labeled fro humans.
You can buy a good size Jug of the Pyrantel Pamote at KVVET on line for about $15 bucks its way cheaper than NEMEX and it is a higher concentration then NEMEX so it last LONGER and you have to give less, AND it tastes great, dogs don't mind it one bit ( ;Dand if your wormy, you can take it too! LOL since it IS labeled for humans! ;D)
next is safeguard paste, we give the Paste, labeled for horses or cattle or in the case of puppies, the liquid labled for goats. the Paste we give at a rate of twice of what is given to cattle, (If the dog is over a year)so look at the directions on the Safeguard tube, and double it.
Ivermectin, labled for pigs and cattle...given monthly at the rate of 1/10ml per 20 lbs to control/prevent heartworms and IF YOU ARE CERTAIN YOUR DOG IS HEARTWORM NEGATIVE, then you can give at a rate of 1/10ml per 10 lbs to kill worms as well as heartworms.
You will need a needle and syringe to draw up the correct amount from the bottle, then simple twist off the needle and squirt the liquid into their mouth or onto a doggie biscuit and insure they consume it all. (it's pretty unpleasant tasting, so he biscuit method works best.)
Because our dogs hunt, and are in a kennel type environment, we worm monthly, in addition to giving heartworm preventive monthly.
Family pets/non hunting pets probably don't need to be wormed so frequently...but heartworm preventives should be given year round, regardless.
Not all horse, cattle and pig wormers are created equal, SOME will kill your dog...so don't just randomly try a new one...
ALSO, Collies, and mixes there of have been known to be highly sensative to Ivermectin, so it is NOT advised to try this on a collie or mix thereof.
